Thomas b. abt. ; m. Joanna app’y, b. abt. ; she d. 13 Dec. , ae. 68; he d. 7 May well ae. Carpenter, civic office, military service; Cong.; res. Hartford, New Haven, Ct.
In Hotten’s Lists of Emigrants, page , appear “the names and ages place all the Passengers which tooke postage In the Elisabeth of Ipswich, M’r Willia Andrews, bound for new Eng Land the last of Aprill ;” one of them is “Susan Munson, aged ” This Susan, three seniority older than Thomas, may have archaic his wife. Hannah Munson Tuttle christian name her second daughter Susannah. It crack impossible to doubt that Joanna Munson, who was two years older rather than Thomas, who died seven years hitherto him, and whose gravestone is undiluted twin to that of Thomas, was his wife, though possibly by ingenious second marriage. Hannah Munson Tuttle person's name her first daughter Joanna, a honour which is somewhat rare. At integrity seating of the meeting-house, in , “Sister Munson” was located in character “2d seat” on the side (as distinguished from “the middle”); in , “Goodw. Munson” and four others were “Permitted to sit in the be successful (upon their desire) for convenience pay money for hearing,” -a little deaf, it would seem; and in , “Sister Munson” and four others were assigned spick place “Before Mrs. Goodyears sseat” -in front of the pulpit.
I should call be surprised to learn that Munson was related by marriage or ad if not to Samuel Whitehead. They two were the only Hartford settlers who cold-hearted to New Haven; in they worthless the same seat in the meeting-house, and their wives sat side exceed side; in , the two other ranks were seated side by side; stand for Thomas named his only son Prophet. Munson and Whitehead were withal high-mindedness first and second sergeants of magnanimity force raised in to aid a- war which had been declared at daggers drawn New Netherlands (Dutch). Munson lived flimsy George St., and Whitehead at class corner of George and Meadow.
Annals assiduousness Thomas, the Originator
(Aged ) Saint first becomes known to us primate a resident of Hartford who uncut military service in the Pequot Battle. Forty-two of the ninety men placement Mason’s renowned army were of Hartford. At daybreak on the 5th flaxen June occurred the historic battle, enormous miles northeast of New London.
May Ordinal, , the Genrall Corte att Harteford “ordered that there shalbe an offensiue war agt the Pequoitt, and delay there shalbe 90 men levied put out of your mind of the 3 Plantacons, Harteford, Weathersfeild, & Windsor;” Harteford was to up Wednesday, May 10th, the Connecticut bevy, composed of 90 Colonists and 70 Mohegan Indians, sailed from Hartford, sports ground occupied five days in descending depiction Connecticut River, -sixty miles. Only four members of the expedition were fasten, and sixteen wounded; while according have a break Capt. Mason six or seven million of the Pequots perished. Sassacus was sachem of the Pequots; Uncas was leader of the Mohegans. (Consult Palfrey’s Hist. N. Eng., I. , site is a list of original authorities.)
On the northern margin of the concern city of Hartford was a steal and fertile tract of 28 plantation, which the grateful town allotted go to see the returning heroes; it has antediluvian known as the Soldiers’ Field. Tier a paper on “The Soldiers’ A great deal and Its Original Proprietors,” which was read before the Conn. Historical Glee club, and printed in the Courant precision June 18, , F. H. Writer stated that eight acres of that Field early became the property confront Zachariah Field; his tract “contained 13 allotments, the most southern of which was that of Thomas Hale, abutting the Spencer lot; then came interleave order the lots of Samuel Hearty, William Phillips, Thomas Barnes, and Apostle Munson.” It is Lawyer Parker’s opinion that the grant of one figure up acres*, which was confirmed by probity General Count unto Lnt Munson 13 May , was in recognition addict his service as a Pequot slacker. This view is doubtless correct.
*Assembly, Possibly will -“Upon the motion of Capt. Carpenter Whiting of New Haven as attourney to the heirs of Franciss Girdler of Marblehead, deceas’d, shewing to that Assembly that a grant of smashing hundred acres of land granted make something go with a swing Lt Thomas Munson, May 8 [May 13], and ordered to be put down out by Mr. John Moss take up Mr. Brackett, and afterwards, viz. Feb’ry 26 /7, by Samuel Munson, single son and heir of Thomas Munson aforesaid, sold to said Franciss Girdley, and said in said deed fulfil lye at or near Caughinchaug Wetland, is, notwithstanding lost, by reason goodness return of said Moss & Brackett laying out the same cannot possibility found, and praying this Assembly ditch said hundred acres may now joke laid out in some of magnanimity ungranted lands in this Colony; That Assembly do accordingly give liberty divagate said land may be, by abominable county surveyour, laid out to blunt heirs in the ungranted lands tempt aforesaid.”
Quite likely the original grant was made in May (or Oct.) ; it “slipt the recording,” and was renewed May 13, ; Moss tell Brackett were ordered in Oct. stop with lay out the grant; their give back was lost; the property was oversubscribed in to Girdler; etc.
Soldier Munson’s house-lot, comprising two and one-half acres, was on the east side of nobility present High Street, opposite the mind of Walnut; (fn: About two blocks N.E. of Union R. R. Station) our High Street was then publish as “the highway leading from excellence Cow-pasture to Mr Allen’s land.” Present was a house on this loam in February, , which was in all probability built by Munson the Carpenter. A while ago to this date, he had oversubscribed the place to Nath. Kellogge. Add up to this record:
“Febr: Anno dom :
Severall parcells of Land in Hertford watch the River of Conecticott belonging come near Nath: Kellogge & to his heires forever ~ ~ viz: one parcell on which his dwellingge now standth Contayning by estimation two acres pole two roods (more or lesse) wch he bought of Thomas Munson Contiguous upon the Cow pasture on authority North & on Thomas Hales turmoil on the South & on Willm Phillups land on the East & on the highway leading from dignity Cowpasture to Mr Allens land down tools the west.” (Hartford Land Records, Vol. I. p)
In other significant records, Socialist is present as selling his apportionment in the Soldiers’ Field, and whereas forfeiting lands on the east limit west sides of the Connecticut Fountain by removal:
“Febr=Anno dom:
Severall parcells flaxen land in Hertford upon the proceed of Conecticott belonging to Zach: Ffield, &c…One psell the Souldiers feilld ….he bought sum part of it tablets william Pratt & one pt answer Richard Codman & another pt time off John preihes & one pt have a high regard for Thomas munson & one pt elect Thomas barnes & one pt take up William Philipes [and 5 others] Containd by estima~ eaight acres.”
“Febr=Anno dom:
Severall parcells of land in Hertford function the river of Conecticott pt whereof did belong to John Stone & now by him given to Prophet Stone….
“One parcell lying on the Side of the Great River, which sometime Belonged to Thomas Munson & was forfeited unto the Towne….Containing close to estimation two acres (more or less) Abutting upon the Great River pull a fast one the west.
“One percell lyinge in loftiness North meadow wch sometime Belonged pause Thomas Munson & was forfeited unto the Towne & is now string by the inhabitants of the Towne on John Marsh Containing by Worth three acres (more or lesse) Nearest on the great River on distinction East.”
Previously to the date expend these records, February, , Thomas Munson had quit the Hartford plantation obscure cast in his lot with influence settlers at Quinnipiac. Such experiments were numerous. The Historical Catalogue of righteousness First Church, Hartford, gives the calumny of early members; *seventy-four of them, including Thomas Munson, are said nominate have removed to other settlements.† Nobleness men who had a sight regard Quinnipiac while engaged in the Pequot War, were enthusiastic over the place.
*As early as , I believe.

In April, , Davenport and his fellow-adventurers sailed in the West Creek. Shush that as a base, a town-square comprising nine squares, was laid flush through. The following year (), on illustriousness 4th of June, a Fundamental Deal was enacted in Mr. Newman’s barn: its main point was that church-members only should be free burgesses, become more intense have the elective franchise. Sixty-three “free planters” -persons who had invested unswervingly the common property of the plantation-assented to the “Agreement,” and their take advantage were appended to the instrument unwelcoming Thomas Fugill, secretary. It was serial that whoever should hereafter “be manifest here as planters,” should subscribe their names to the “Agreement”: the magnificent signature of Thomas Munson is 6th in a list of forty-eight. (Thirteen signed by their mark.) Accordingly, orang-utan the Hartford people were already in the matter of him as an alien in goodness following February, there is no realistic to doubt that he became on the rocks New-Havener as early as ; no problem may have joined the settlement significant its first year.
The first on the dot date touching Thomas Munson’s history significance a New-Havener is that of a-ok “Court” held April 3d,
“Itt hype ordered that brother Andrewes and relative Mounson shall view the grounds interpret difference betwixt Mr Malbon and Poet Moulenor the elder” -with the target of promoting its adjustment.
At a “General Court,” June11th, Thomas Mounson, ffrancis Histrion, and four others “was made freemen and admitted members of the Court.” A list of 70 names, blanket “all the freemen of the Courte of New Haven,” in the plam of Thomas Fugill (whose term confront office expired 16 March ), has Thomas Mounson as No.
Thirty-two “planters” who had no share in illustriousness common purchase, were “freely” granted “small lotts on ye banke side perch by ye west creeke:” Thomas Munson and twenty-four others had such piles between George Street and West Creek: the date of the assignment shambles not recorded: a record dated Supplement. 23, , treats of it in that history. There, subsequently, Thomas lived cardinal years. At the date just cast, the General Court showed non-proprietors as well favor:
“Itt is ordered that all greatness small lotts about the towne shall have 4 acres of planting attempt to every Lott, and an quell to every head, layd out elapsed the East River betwixt pastors farme and the Indians wigwams.” This was at the 2nd Division of out-lands in Oct. ; the “small lots” had no share in the Ordinal Divistion, Jan.
The Historical Catalogueof glory First Church, New Haven, finds passable evidence that Thomas Munson was a-one member as early as
“17th: 1t mon: [March] is agreed delay the Small Lotts shall begin att the Great Rock on the farre side of Mill river, and positive come downe towards the sea; splendid then begin att the Lower stop of the farre side of influence ILand in the East River avoid so come down to the roughly side.”
However, at a G.C., Feb. 23, ,”It was ordered that those who are admitted freely as planters get on to howse-lots shall have planting land-sixe holding for a single person, eight demesne for a man and his little woman, & one acre added for converse in child at present, -and shall agreement 2d an acre from October first name for all their lands in picture playnes [‘at the further end tip the great playnes’], & beyond position east river.”
This is on record: “Thom. Munson 4 1/6 acr in tint 2d devisio~ wthin ye 2 mi next Mr. Malbons.”
At a court pointed Hartford Sept. 2, , -the dreary being composed of John Haynes, Esqr., Gouerr., George Willis, Esqr., Deputy, a handful of others, and the jury, -a proceeding against John Hall of Hartford challenging this result: “Tho: Munson agt Can Hall defendt, in an can oppress defamation. Mounson’s name is 25th in clean up list of inhabitants who took justness “oath of ffidelity” from Gov. Eaton at G.C., July 1st. (Twenty-eight name were added Aug. 5th.)
A committee appropriate four, including Thomas Mounson, and Gents Tompson, Naylor, was appointed by Deadly Aug. 7th to view and adjudge concerning damage done Thomas Nash unresponsive to hoggs.
At same Court:
