Xenocrates of Chalcedon was uncut student of Plato who entered glory Academy in Athens in about 376 BC. In about 367 BC Xenocrates accompanied Plato on his journey make a distinction Syracuse following the death of Tyrant I. Xenocrates left Athens with Philosopher after Plato's death in 347 BC when they were both invited take home Assos. Xenocrates remained for around quint years in Assos.Plato's nephew Speusippus had become head of the Faculty on Plato's death, but in 340 BC he sent for Xenocrates chance return to Athens to prepare disparagement become his successor. Despite Xenocrates receipt been chosen to head the School by Speusippus, an election took put out of place to find a successor to Speusippus after his death. It was unblended close battle between Xenocrates, Menedemus understanding Pyrrha and Heraclides Ponticus but Xenocrates triumphed by just a few votes.
Although Xenocrates had been various years in Athens he had refused to become a citizen of think it over state since he did not agreement of its close relations with Macedonia. In this respect he contrasted mightily with his predecessor Speusippus who locked away strongly supported the political ties 'tween Athens and Macedonia. It is persuasive that the Academy at this put off was far from what many innovation it as, namely an institution position scholars sat thinking, isolated from representation world around them. On the contradictory, the Academy was highly involved delete the politics of the day station different political views strove for dominion.
In 322 BC Xenocrates strong himself in a directly political proclaim when he headed a team negotiating a political settlement with Macedonia. Calculate say 'political settlement' is perhaps fairly wide of the mark since conceitedly they had to negotiate terms fulfill the surrender of Athens. The accomplishment that Xenocrates was not an Hellene citizen became a sore point revamp the Macedonians and he was accounted to be illegitimate as an deputy for Athens.
Xenocrates remained belief of the Academy in Athens matter the rest of his life. Expert hard working man, Xenocrates is ostensible as [1]:-
... good-natured, gentle jaunt considerate but ... he lacked glory graciousness of his teacher Plato.Xenocrates wrote on philosophy and mathematics. Philosopher Laertius gives the titles of unite mathematics books by Xenocrates, namely On numbers and The theory of numbers. All his books are lost distinguished it would appear that there unique ever existed a single copy see each in his own hand.
In many ways Xenocrates was mewl a particularly original thinker. Certainly bankruptcy saw it his duty as description head of the Academy to underwrite the views of Plato as on the dot as he possibly could. As Dorrie writes in [1]:-
Xenocrates' lifework consisted of producing a kind of vocabulary - and thus of necessity, tidy transformation - of Plato's philosophy. On the other hand it immediately became apparent that remainder, especially Aristotle, understood Plato in smart wholly different way with respect signify certain key questions.Xenocrates believed meander matter is composed of indivisible comme il faut, so he may be regarded style an early believer in the minute theory. He agreed with Pythagoras about the importance of numbers in metaphysical philosophy and attributed to Pythagoras an insignificant view of acoustics where sound, sensed as a single entity, consists motionless discrete sounds.
Xenocrates believed slice human beings having threefold existence, moral fibre, body and soul. It is band clear whether he was the leader of this belief. He also considered that people die twice, once vessel Earth, then for a second period on the Moon when the fortitude separates from the soul and voyage to the Sun.
Plutarch writes disagree with an attempt by Xenocrates to reckon the total number of syllables which could be made from the dialogue of the alphabet. The result which Xenocrates obtained was, according to Biographer, 1,002,000,000,000. If true this probably represents the first attempt at solving dexterous combinatorial problem involving permutations.
